The Pioneers set the tone early. A.J. Whitehead scored on a 2-yard run, then broke free for a 59-yard punt return touchdown to give New Providence a quick 14-0 lead. In the second quarter, Jack Fitzgerald added a 4-yard rushing score, pushing the margin to 21-0 at halftime.
Quarterback Kevin Reilly connected with Daniel Porretti on a 64-yard strike to open the third quarter. Minutes later, Whitehead made the defensive play of the game, returning an interception 63 yards for another touchdown. Gov. Livingston’s only highlight came when Elijah Garcia sprinted 76 yards for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 35-7. Whitehead capped his big day with a second 2-yard rushing score in the fourth.
A.J. Whitehead: 2 rushing TDs, 1 punt return TD, 1 interception return TD, plus 5 tackles.
Kevin Reilly: 9-of-14 passing, 171 yards, 1 TD.
Daniel Porretti: 5 catches, 104 yards, 1 TD.
Jack Fitzgerald: 1 rushing TD, 6-for-6 on extra points, 6 tackles.
Mike Petses: Led the defense with 16 tackles and a forced fumble.
Elijah Garcia (GL): 114 rushing yards and a 76-yard touchdown run.
New Providence improved to 1-0 with a balanced effort on offense, defense, and special teams. Gov. Livingston was held to only 29 passing yards.
